CONFIRMED: Sydney House Hunters Ripped Off
Criminals are targeting Sydney house-hunters through Fairfax Digital's Domain.com.au real estate website.
Fraudsters are placing fake rental property listings for affordable inner Sydney apartments on the site. Upon contacting the purported landlord, would-be renters are being instructed to transfer money offshore in exchange for apartment keys that will never arrive.
that would have been a prime target too, I can tell you after going through the experience recently that it's very much a race (around the cbd) to give money to agents to secure your lease.
so something like 419 or advanced payment, would be very difficult to detect. Even having overseas landlords isn't uncommon. My last apartment was owned by someone in France...
i can confirm this is also happening on the Trading post website.
A friend came across a car that was too cheap to be real, with really broken english used in the advert - turned out to be a scam.
he went with it for a while to hear their story, similar thing - living in the UK, cant get back, will mail keys, provide full name/address and then bank info etc etc

Wow, you aren't safe from phishing anywhere. Good to know they pulled the listings quickly.
